PCCY's Picasso Project seeks volunteers

If you are an educator, artist, or just like working with kids, Public Citizens for Children and Youth has a great volunteer opportunity for you.

The Picasso Project works with Philly public schools to support innovative arts-based project throughout the school year. Murals, plays, poetry slams, visual arts or musical performances – we do it all, and we need Volunteer Liaisons to provide on-the-ground support to help keep the projects running smoothly.

Tom Whitman, an Associate Professor of Music at Swarthmore College and a Liaison at Taggart Elementary this past year says: "I served as a volunteer liaison with PCCY's Picasso Project in the spring of 2019. This provided the opportunity to observe a well-designed project in a high functioning elementary school in the Philadelphia public school district. I have spent about 15 years teaching music in public schools in underserved communities, so the experience of watching someone else's project close up was illuminating and energizing.  I obtained valuable insights into my own work; indeed, I have already imported some of the techniques I observed into my own teaching."

Being a Liaison takes about 4 hours a month (2 one-hour school visits per month) from January to May 2020. We work closely with you to support all aspects of the work, and first-time Liaisons are paired with experienced Liaisons in order to become acquainted.

If interested, or if you know someone who might be, please contact Tim Gibbon at 215-563-5848 x22.
