Strategic Planning sometimes gets a bad rap as not delivering a return on investment (of time, effort, and money). But the reason planning systems often break down because of faulty preparation and implementation. Well-managed nonprofit organizations can overcome these problems by involving the right people in the process and by beginning the process with an organizational review that includes a solid ‘environmental assessment’.

We’ll review the why, what and how of various approaches to organizational assessment and some of the products available to help. Dashboards and tracking systems can help keep priority issues front and center over time and we will explore some examples. When strategic planning is supported with an organizational review, it will be more successful and grounded in facts rather than assumptions.
