APM's 50th Anniversary Speaker Series features Sonia Manzano

Over the course of its 50 years, Asociación Puertorriqueños en Marcha (APM) has become a leader in early childhood education and providing necessary resources to parents and families in Philadelphia.

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, APM has launched a four-part Speaker Series that convenes thought leaders, experts and activists to discuss issues that are central to the social services organization. The second part of the series will feature actress and author Sonia Manzano who is known for playing Maria on “Sesame Street” from 1971 to 2015.

Manzano will deliver a keynote address about the impact of early childhood education and the important roles that families, the media and communities play in child development. Other topics that will be discussed during the evening include parental involvement, early intervention and the best tools and practices to help all children succeed.

Manzano will then join a panel discussion involving professionals from education advocacy and public policy and other community stakeholders. Following the panel, she will host a book signing of her coming-of-age memoir, “Becoming Maria: Love and Chaos in the South Bronx.”
