Applying for Social Security and SSI benefits during the pandemic

Although Social Security offices are not providing onsite service, people can still file online or by phone. Call 1-800-772-1213 for a phone appointment, or use our Office Locater to get the local office number.

SSI provides monthly payments to people age 65 and older who have limited income and assets. People under 65 who are disabled who meet the financial limits can also receive SSI payments.

Generally, an individual can only have $2,000 in assets, and a married couple $3,000. However, we may not count all income and resources when we decide if someone can get SSI.
